Why DIY Beats Buying
A shop-bought jumper is fine. A DIY jumper is a personality. Making your own means you control exactly how much glitter, tinsel, and questionable judgement goes into it — and it's usually cheaper than a novelty jumper from a shop.
What You'll Need
- A plain jumper (charity shop finds are perfect — you won't miss it come January)
- A hot glue gun
- Tinsel, pom-poms, and felt off-cuts
- Battery-operated fairy lights (the flat, sew-in kind are safest)
- Fabric paint or iron-on patches for any text or graphics
Three Easy Builds
1. The 3D Christmas Tree
Glue a triangle of green felt to the front, layer on pom-poms as baubles, and finish with a felt star at the top. Fairy lights around the edge take it to the next level.
2. The Pun Jumper
Iron-on letters spelling out a Christmas pun ("Fleece Navidad" is a reliable crowd-pleaser) on a plain background. Simple, cheap, and always gets a laugh.
3. The Maximalist
Every embellishment at once — tinsel trim, pom-poms, a light-up nose, and a bell that jingles when you walk. This is the build most likely to end up in our Hall of Shame highlights.
Show It Off
Once it's finished, don't let it gather dust in a drawer next January — submit a photo and let the community vote on how gloriously bad it really is.
